Stones and Color

At some point, someone placed these stones on the log. Perhaps they thought they looked pretty or perhaps it was a child that just wanted to collect rocks. In either case, I find that they add a little interest and color to the scene.

While the wearing and color draw your eye to the top portion of the image below, the stones help 'anchor' the scene. There is something simple about the collection of rocks that offsets the complicated color patterns and the scaring caused by the insects boring through the tree.

These rocks all lined up neatly in the low point of the tree crotch to accent a leading line through the image.

This place on the tree trunk has been recently worn down showing the true color of the wood underneath. The reds of the wood and the greens of the parasitic plants give this section a nice character and remind us that all this silvery wood was once part of a vibrant tree trunk and stood for many years.
