A Somber Place Under Bright Blue Skies

Most of the gravestones here are proper, modest ones reflecting the more middle class society of the townsfolk and nearby farmers. But there are a few on a grander scale that standout. As you can see, looking in the distance above and in a few other photos, there are some family mausoleums here suggesting a few quite well-to-do families. But above you see individual markers on a grander scale suggesting people with rich mourners or outsized egos.

When the marker has a clear religious theme, then, of course, it is piety that motivates people to erect these large tokens of their loss.

But many residents mark their location and piety more simply with stones that cut right to the chase.

Recognized with a typical sign of a lost child, this gravestone is almost illegible in the shadow of the strong sunlight. Some softer stone used for this work has eroded the surface enough to make it difficult to know who this loved one was.
