This lava tunnel is called Mary's Trumpet. Not sure what Mary we are referring to here but it is a trumpet because of the shape of the tunnel. When the water rushes in, it fills the space in the back so that when it comes back out there is a bit of noise.
Also there is an opening near the back where the water, when the sea is rougher than today, when going in will gush upwards in a spout. We saw a little sea spray but not much more. It was not a rough day.
As you can see, there is a reason there are no houses or resorts located here. All the shoreline is covered in lava. Not much of a place to swim unless maybe you are into snorkeling.
Even along the shore here, you can see the characteristic red rock sitting among the lava flows reminding us that there is a volcano that sits nearby.
So, after an outing to see this less visited portion of the island, we head home to pack. I loaded up my cameras and memories and flew back to the contiguous 48 to the land of rain and cold. Perhaps one day soon I will get to see blue sunny skies again?
