At the Foot of Haleakala

Here, on the southern end of the island, we are under the eaves of Haleakala and its frequent cloud cover. Looking up the hill in the general direction of the volcano, we see a variety of cinder cones.

Some of these are covered in what appears to be more sand-like material from this distance, while others are clearly volcanic cinders. More like the clinkers that you'd pull from a coal fired furnace. this is especially clear in the foreground below.

The hillside is dotted with cinder cones and the base of the hillside is paved with a deep deposit of crumbled lava cinders. Even though this portion of the volcano, near the ocean is covered in lots of greenery, there is still plenty of evidence of the forces of nature.
