Mt Hope Cemetery

On the edge of Baker City is the town cemetery, Mt Hope. Curiously named since there is no mountain or even hill there. It is all quite flat. Yet, it is filled with people how worked hard to eek out a living in an expansive country still filled with dangers and many unknowns.

Considering the era of the interments and location of this cemetery, there are gravestones ehre of surprising detail and delicacy. For example, the one below is filled with well carved lilies, yet surprisingly devoid of religion.

We, of course, find markers here announcing the presence of the fraternal order of Woodmen. In a place where you are really on your own, having a support group could be vital.

The next stone shows the traditional Victorian grave symbol of the handshake suggesting that we'll meet again, along with the chain symbolizing an Odd Fellows membership.

The Woodman below has a latin phrase on his grave that translates to "While silent, cries". Not entirely clear what that means, but we can make various guesses.
