Buena Vista Cemetery

We are getting settled in our house sit in Angels Camp, CA. On our first outing, we naturally sought out a cemetery (or two or three). This one, in the small but charming town of Murphys, was our first stop.

Not only are there old and interesting (also sad) grave stones here, there are also those that raise interesting questions. For example, Although Larry and Flo were married, she is listed as a "friend". What's that all about?

Now that we are in California, we find a new organization acronyms to decode. These are the Native Daughters/Sons of the Golden West. The various local chapters are called parlors.

This being the gold country, many of the older grave markers carry a tweeted version of the life histories. This fellow below immigrated from Wales and spent his life in the gold country. Did he dig for gold? Probably. Was he an Odd Fellow? Certainly...see the chain links at the top.

Another immigrant who lived a long but probably very hard life here.

Others immigrated from the east coast to try their hand in the gold fields.

And, as is always the case, there are residents here who tell sad stories on their stones.
