Patterns and Colors

There are plots of fences in Snohomish. This one has small gaps between the boards that allow the sun to shine through making a pattern on the sidewalk. Sometimes patterns are fun.

Sometimes patterns are more complicated and delicate. This dandelion exemplifies the repetitive characteristic of things in the natural world. This probably has a lot to do with why are are drawn to the natural world.

Other times the patterns are enhanced by color.

Sometimes the plant seems to be sending mixed messages: delicate purple flowers and spiky leaves. Carrot and stick didn't start with people.

The pattern in this stump seems to rise to unnatural heights when viewed from close to the ground. This must be what insects and toads see when they look at the world.

And, as always, the light and shadow point out patterns we usually ignore. When you look at the stone do you see the shadows or the pattern in the rock itself? Or do neither register for you and the plant is what you see first? The world is complicated. If I can simplify a little of it for you to notice something you missed, then I've done my job.
