In spite of the fact that we still have not seen a clear blue sky since early in December, there is some sunlight to be found.
In a walk around the block, it is possible to find a few things that catch one's attention. There is a bush, not far from our house, that is in just the right place to have the right combination of sun and shade to really grow the epiphytes. With the green star-shaped moss fronds pushing through the lichens, it always reminds me of a coral reef with some animals flat and others reaching out for food.
It is always surprising how, with a little light, even the drearist scene perks up and makes a statement. While the white snow gives things a fresh look, it always good to find the colors of nature once again and know that we've had another day of reprieve from the end. For, as Robert Frost wrote:
Some say the world will end in fire,Some say in ice. From what I’ve tasted of desireI hold with those who favor fire. But if it had to perish twice,I think I know enough of hateTo say that for destruction iceIs also greatAnd would suffice.
We've had both this year and averaging over the entire country, we've had both at the same time. I'm taking the appearance of the sun as an omen that perhaps the rate of fire and ice will begin to diminish at least a little in '22.
Fingers crossed.
