At least in some directions, the span covered by volcanic rock does not appear to be infinite. the hills in the distance are "normal" hills. But between here and there, there is very little that is normal.
A prime example of this is Inferno Cone. This hill of cinders doesn't seem so large until you notice that there is a person standing near the top of the hill. Except for the line of trees at the edge of the hill in the lower left, there is little here to suggest that this is an actual place that humans could/would go.
I left the traffic sign in the image (normally, I'd edit that out) to give you both a sense of scale and to remind you that in that direction is more of the emptiness seen here.
This is a place filled with wonders that are rarely seen elsewhere. The expanses of emptiness, the jagged volcanic rock, the vast treeless horizons under a clear blue sky...all calling you to stand and listen to the wind and take in the silence.
There are directions to look where there is nothing. An endless vista of lava and cinders. Yes, there are a few trees, but only a few.
Upon closer inspection, we see that there are many colors here and epiphytes galore. It take patience to really see this place. The loneliness we continued to find in the post-covid world aids our ability to explore slowly and take in these strange horizons.
