Not far away from the Canyonlands is Capitol Reef National Park. This place is different what we've seen previously because we can easily drive to see a lot of it.
Once past the orchards and campgrounds, there is a small parking area and a narrow unpaved road that takes you along a winding path through a pretty remarkable canyon.
Instead of looking down on the rock formations from a half a mile above, we are looking up at the walls around us.
At this curve in the road, we have the afternoon sun on the far wall framed by the clear sky and the near wall in deep shadow.
There are places where the wind and water have carved holes in the rock.
And there are place where the stone faces have been carved into rather more abstract forms.
