Life on the Plains

The areas not planted in wheat are small and reserved for homes an equipment storage. The trees huddled around the houses remained us that the winter here can be harsh and any shielding from the wind and snow is a big help.

Trees are only preserved for either a practical purpose or in places that cannot be farmed, such as stream beds or gullies.

The land is crisscrossed with the double tracks of the tractors that planted the wheat.

Here, we see that this field is ripe and the harvest has begun. It is tremendously dusty operation. I can imagine that the farmers are quite exhausted at the end of the day from the dust, the heat, and the constant attention to line they must follow to be sure that every morsel of the crop is collected.
