In the image above you can see on the nearby islands trying to imitate a mountain among the extensive cloud cover.
But I find these sorts of scapes to be more interesting in monochrome where I can control the textures of the clouds and the contracts of the hills more easily.
I found another (lone) sailboat coming into view. In the distance is the Kitsap peninsula and the Olympic mountains behind it. You can clearly see the rain falling. Yet the sailboat and I are dry as a we can be while they get soaked.
As the boat sails toward more open water, the scene takes on a more lonesome aspect. Sailing around an island feels kind of safe; sailing into the open ocean is another thing altogether. Now even the less foreboding clouds still feel menacing. You really get a sense of how alone you are in that small boat so very far from help.
