Evergreen- Washelli Cemetery - Jewish Section, Part I

We happened to be driving past the Evergreen-Washelli cemetery and found that the older section of the Jewish portion of the section was open and we decided to visit. I did not have my cameras with me so today's offerings are all from my iPhone.

It is always interesting to step into a cemetery that adorned by people from a different cultural tradition. It means that the carvings on the markers are new and interesting.

Many of the stones had photos, a surprise to us. Although we've been in jewish cemeteries on several continents before, we've not seen these sorts of photos before.

Even though there is little on the markers than we can read, reading hebrew is not an option for us, you feel that you know so much more about the residents here by seeing what they looked like. In much the same way that a video conference is more engaging than a phone call, knowing what the deceased looked like helps understand and identify with them.

I cannot tell if Israel here was a victim of WWI or he just ran out of steam abou that time.

Ida had a short life. We can only hope is was a good one mostly filled with joy and delight and not constant illness and sorrow.

Some of the carvings are quite interesting and the color of the stone is an excellent background for the man-made detail.
