A Visit to Fairhaven (Bellingham)

We finally got out of sight of the house for a few hours and visited the town of Fairhaven. This is nowadays part of Bellingham and forms the historic district. It is a fun little place not far from the campus of Western Washington University.

I thought I'd being with the really good parts and show you a couple rubbish bins on the corner.

On the corner where I sat on a bench in the sun, is a really good bookstore, VIllage Books. They were open for business and let customers into their three story space no more than 50 at a time. To do this they handed plastic cards with numbers on them to all the visitors so when they ran out out, no one else got in. They never seemed to get close to running out while we were there. People were around, but pretty sparse.

After shopping and looking about town a bit, we stopped at the Fatpie restaurant for pizza. We ate outside and enjoyed the (finally) warm weather.

Across the street is a barber shop that seemed to need the front window photographed.

This part of town sits on a hill that slopes down to the sound (where one catches the ferry to Alaska, for example) making the backside three stories tall and the front only two. Behind that is an empty space that has been converted to a public green space and outdoor seating for the local bars and restaurants.

The historic section of Bellingham, is filled with these statues of people just hanging out. In front of the bookstore is a seated figure of Mark Twain. These give it a friendly, "come on down" kinda feel to the place.

After we left here, we rode to the modern part of town but it was just not interesting this visit. And the road work made getting about a little cumbersome. So we decided to try visiting a local park with a waterfall, Whatcom Park Falls. Well, that was a mistake. Everybody that wasn't in town was here. We turned around and went home.
