A Few Flowers

Even though it is getting to late summer now, it is possible to still find a few flowers. I'm pretty sure that "late" summer comes earlier here than it does in most other places in the US.

Yet, because it getting later in the season, the flowers are not nearly so spectacular. This next one is still colorful, but looking a bit sad and droopy.

The lavender is getting a little long in the tooth and the blossoms are showing a bit of brown around the edges.

But the variegated leaves, especially in monochrome, are holding up well. I suspect, however, that the good definition of the veins is due to it being the dry season and the leaves having less liquid inside to plump them up.

Someone down the street has a couple pots of very colorful flowers. You saw one of them yesterday sitting next to a bench. This is the one that is not next to the bench. Pretty impressive in the driest part of the year.

However, I do occasionally find a flower that is more than a small, dainty thing that is still in full bloom. I guess these folks water regularly.

As you have seen before, an intensely colored flower can sometimes be more interesting in B&W. This rose is a really nice color somewhere between red and orange, but when rendered in shades of gray, it tells a different story. This speaks of elegance and pride rather than a showy ostentation. This is how we head from summer to autumn...with our heads held high, in our finest clothes, knowing that the thing which beats us down with be itself beaten whether this 'thing' is political, economic, or biological.

Hang in there everyone.
