Another Visit to St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church Cemetery

Amador City is near Jackson, the county seat of Amador County. We decided to stop in again at the Serbian Church and have another look about.

It is clear that some people interred here are of modest means. The marker above is made by hand with love.

Mono Lake Cemetery

Mono Lake cemetery sits up the hill just north of the lake. From this higher vantage point, you can see the road leading down to the lake. A turn just before the lake takes you to the left in the photo and out to the cemetery.

The Cemetery at St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church

As you have seen, there are variety of cemeteries in Jackson. The high point of this tour is the cemetery at St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church. Just a short way north of downtown is the oldest Serbian Orthodox Church in the America.

Angels Camp Protestant Cemetery

The Protestant Cemetery is located just across the street from the Catholic. These folks are generally less expressive with their gravestones. But this set caught my attention.

Some of the gravestones are fairly ornate. Clearly, there was money in this family. It is an odd thing to put together...lots of money from mining or a support business out in the middle of nowhere.

South of Provo, UT, after turning off of I-15 onto US 6 to head toward Moab, we passed through a place called Mill Fork. There is is no 'there' there...no town, no nothing...except this tiny cemetery.

We happened upon a small cemetery during our jaunt about Skagit County and decided to stop in for a look about. Nothing special, but there are a few markers worth commenting on (and photographing).

Evergreen- Washelli Cemetery - Jewish Section part II

 

We decided to return to the cemetery for a more complete look about in the Jewish section and found the older part from yesterday's report to be closed, at least to vehicular traffic. Hence, we headed across the street to the newer section for a browse. This part is also quite interesting.

We happened to be driving past the Evergreen-Washelli cemetery and found that the older section of the Jewish portion of the section was open and we decided to visit. I did not have my cameras with me so today's offerings are all from my iPhone.

Certainly, on of the best cemeteries we've visited is Highgate in London. It is filled with Victorian cemetery art of the highest order and populated by a zoo of famous people along with the lowly folks like us.

This young girl stands as a constant reminder of someone lost to the cycle of life. I know that the religious among us find cemeteries peaceful for the promise of a better life after this one. I, however, find it peaceful as a place filled with interesting statuary, groomed lawns, the stories of lives well spent, and the separation such place always give from the surrounding buy world of the living. It is place to reflect on my own life and how I imagine I might be remembered one day. Of course, I don't plan to be buried in a  cemetery but rather scattered in some place pregnant with memories and surrounded natural beauty.

Sometimes we find a gem amongst the chaff (a mixed metaphor is the best I can do today) such as the one above. It is rare to find a Hungarian flag on a gravestone and even rarer to find one that tell you the avocation of each of the interred.

This is one of the older cemeteries in Seattle and it is now home to many of the pioneers. I don't know that these two fellows were important shakers and movers, but they were clearly out here early in the process of creating the city.

Since we all need at least a brief respite from the endless stream of flower photos, today starts a short series of photos from Lake View Cemetery in Seattle. As you may recall, we tried to visit recently but the gates were locked. After figuring out that that it was open on the weekends, we were successful on our second trip.

In addition to the military section, there were sections for many different persuasions and backgrounds. We found a section for the jew and at least two different areas for Orthodox christians. One was apparently for the Russians and the other for everyone else. There is also a section for the Japanese. But, most of the place seemed to be filled with protestants for various sorts.

With the restrictions lifting and a spot of sunshine, we headed out to investigate one the major cemeteries in Seattle. This is the Evergreen-Washelli Cemetery in north Seattle, just across the road from the hospital where Seamus was born.

We are housesitting in the Manse and, of course, immediately next door is the church and cemetery. the weather finally got to be good enough that we no longer had an excuse to put off a visit.

St. Madoes Cemetery

The village of St. Madoes stands along the north bank of the river Tay not far from the A90. Here, at the edge of town, we find the church and cemetery.
