We Found the Elk!

Out to the east of Dungeness, on the shore near the entrance to Sequim Bay, is Port Williams County Park. Just before the road descends to the shore, there is a large open field. On this day, we were pleased to that at least part of the famous Sequim elk herd was having a rest here. The total herd is estimated to be about 100 Roosevelt elk.

I would have liked to have a better, closer look at these fine beasts, but this is the best I can do without being in the forest you see on the other side of them for cover.

There seems to be the expected ratio to cows to bulls.

And a good bit of cud chewing is happening here as well.

Even from my considerable distance, the cows seem to be watching me. It is not clear at all that I could get any closer.

These folks, on the other hand, are pretty chill. I suppose lying down, out of the wind, in the sunshine is good way to spend the day. Especially if you can do it out in the open where you can see any baddies coming your way.

In the image below we can see how these fine animals enjoy the sun with the hills on the San Juan Islands in the distance.
