Great Blue Heron

On our way back to beautiful downtown Snohomish, after our house sit ws over, we took a scenic ride to Marrowstone Island. This island sits just east of the Olympic Peninsula between it and Whidbey Island. It is not large and scantily populated. At one of the docks we found a heron sitting on the dock and fishing for lunch.

With a serious look in his eyes, he scans the waters for motion.

Seeing nothing in the moment, he relaxes a bit to scan the horizon for threats.

Then, catching the minnow totally off guard, he makes his move and snags a bite to eat!

As I have seen other herons do when food is caught, he gives it a little while to calm down (or die?) before eating it. I suppose the wiggling inside is a bit unsettling.

No doubt this pose is part of his desire to look handsome for the any girl herons that might be looking. Standing there with his head feathers sticking out in the back (sort of like my extra long hair in the back just now since I've been without a haircut for several months) and a fish in mouth. I mean, what could look sexier?
