Zentralfriedhof - VIII

Now, back to the museum....Here is a scene that was often seen at a 19th century funeral.

Below are several coffins.

A collection of urns for the ashes of the cremated.

And here is a fascinating device. This is a bell. It is designed to place the end of the bell pull rope inside the coffin. In case the dead really wasn't dead, he/she would have a away to let those who were known to be living that they, too, were one of them and should be dug up.

One end of the cemetery is set aside for the jewish. her we find a distinctly different graves.

Clearly, there were some quite wealthy jews in Vienna.
