On a hot weekend in June, once upon a time, E and I drove from Staunton to Davis, WV to escape the heat and see a little springtime.
And boy! Did we ever escape from the heat. The first stop was to a place to buy me some jeans. I had only brought shorts and I was freezing. Once warmly wrapped, we headed out to see some birds and plants....and insects.
Lots of green around the river and lots of springtime critters out and about.
I caught this American Goldfinch showing off the seasonal colors while standing on a fence post.
But the most exciting by far were the Tree Swallows (could be another sort, but I believe this is right). they were nesting in boxes provided and had hungry young to feed. Junior was in a take no prisoners mood.
Insects, on the other hand were quite welcome.
Not the best focus on this dragonfly (damselfly?) but he is a hamdsome creature.
At the bed and breakfast where we stayed there was a nest of robins in the tree just outside the door. These fellows seem to be just about the fledge. They all hardly fit in the nest anymore.
