A Ride into the Mountains

We took a ride out of La Paz into the mountains to meet a new friend with our housesitting friend, Deborah. It is surprising how green the land becomes as the altitude increases. This is the region of fruit growers and our new friend, Renee, is among them.

She has a plot of land containing an orchard of a variety of fruit trees. This building, set near the house, is a large, well-equipped kitchen that was once used for cooking classes.

One of the first we encountered was papaya growing in neat clusters.

There was also this old, large fig tree. The shape and multi-trunk character is very reminiscent of the many kinds of figs we saw in Australia.

This damselfly came by for a visit and posed for photo.

Up near the house was the remains of a hummingbird nest.

We had a delightful time with Renee and Deborah. Renee really does live in her own slice of paradise. The mountains were cooler than La Paz and the smells of the fruit really perfumed the air. In addition to the few you see in the photos above, there are grapefruit, guava, lemons, and avocado. The air was filled with delight from both the flora and from the lively conversation. The hibiscus tea Renee served was a high point of the visit. It was enough to convince most anyone that perhaps Baja is a place to discover life anew.
