The Turkey Vulture

On a ride in a different direction out of town toward the coast, we came across a collection of Turkey Vultures waiting near a very smelly (probably fish) dinner.

Fortunately, there were mountains and could in the distance and I was able to get some photos with an interesting background.

This is an image of what I think of when I think of Mexico...desert, cactus, vultures, and mountains receding into the distance.

When you see one of these birds up close, you realize that you don't really need to do that...they are not handsome animals.

They are most commonly seen soaring. Even here, with the sunlight filtered through the wing feathers, this bird is just not appealing. He's a machine built to clean up the desert and remove dead animals. At that, he's great.

But sitting on top of a cardon cactus with the mountains and clouds in the background, he definitely adds to the atmosphere.
