Magnificent Frigatebird
On a drive up the coast headed north from La Paz, we found a many Magnificent Frigatebirds circling along the shore. These pirates of the air are fascinating.
The name comes from their feeding habits. These birds eat by harassing other birds until they vomit up their meal. The frigatebirds then grab the lost meal in the air. The young practice this unusual behavior by carrying sticks and catching them when dropped.
The females are larger than the males and have the white head and breast.
They rarey land on water since their feathers are not waterproof.
We saw dozens of them along the coast, riding thermals to get altitude before heading out for a bite to eat.
