In Search of the Elusive Blue Throat

Among the willows we also saw the American Yellow Warbler. He was a hard bird to photograph and one my better images was this one I almost missed as he leapt from the tree into flight.

But we were fortunate to find a Bluethroat who would come and visit with us for a while. This is an impressive bird with an eye-catching red and blue patch on his throat. You really should visit the link above and listen to his song. It is quite special. The variety in the call is reminiscent of sort of vocal acrobatics you can hear from a lyre bird in Australia.

If you only saw this bird from the back and did not notice the striking blue throat, you might never give it a second look. But once you see and hear him, you are hooked.

He was almost constantly singing. To be fair, this could have been because we were forcing the issue with out incessant recorded bird calls. But even when we stopped for a while, he continued and gave us a fine concert.

This fellow, interestingly, migrates from Asia to Nome and other area of a similar latitude in Alaska. Only in this one corner of North America can you see and hear this wonderful bird.
