Yaquina Head

After a nice rest in Reedsport, we continued north up the coast hwy and stopped just north of Newport at Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area. Here is a cornucopia of natural delights with birds, seals, a lighthouse (these are natural, right?) and scenic ocean everywhere. The cormorant above is coming in for a landing on one of the many offshore rocks.

In the calmer waters protected by these rocks, we find harbor seals diving and looking for food.

The Yaquina Head Lighthouse, at 93 feet (28 m), is the tallest lighthouse in Oregon. The coat of white and black paint really makes it stand out against the intensely blue sky.

Meanwhile, the pelicans and cormorants are busy preening and preparing for the next food search.

The waters here must be rich in food to have so many of these birds resting here.

The White Pelicans are also taking a breather from the rigors of diving in the turbulent waters for lunch.
