The birds do not always get such sunny pleasant weather in which to preen and digest (and obviously poop). Yet this day was a good one for everyone.
It is interesting that no bird feels threatened by the others and that all are content to hang out on the rock and sun themselves.
Even though birds are less bothered by this than I am, I have to believe that this is partly because the water is cold, the sun is warm, and the air is calm. No one is quite hungry enough yet to make a trip back into the cold water worth the effort.
This convention of cormorants has a relaxed and casual feel to it. Similar to that of a group of people who arrive at a meeting early and are waiting for the breakfast buffet to be set out so they can dig in to the morning load of fat, sugar, and coffee.
And here we have clear evidence that when you only have a beak with which to do everything, I really needs to be attached to a flexible neck.
