On past the pattern shop is the machine shop proper. Here we find a selection of tools as you would expect, but on a totally different scale from what you might expect.
Above is a drill press that is attached to a radial arm than can be moved up as much as 10-15 feet and horizontally 6-7 feet to accommodate most any size object you can imagine casting. And is was all built to run on a leather belt and pulley system driven by water.
Next to this is a very large machine for cutting long horizontal pieces. The bed moves the piece back and forth beneath the cutting tool
To get a notion of how that large device works when in action, there was a small one in operation. This one, however, moves the cutting tool not the work piece. Check out this video of how this device operates. Notice how the position of the work piece is moved after each pass and that the direction of the by moving the leather belt from one pulley to another. I find this an amazingly clever arrangement.
Here is much small lathe than the one I showed you yesterday but it is still stands taller than I am.
Here's the workbench across the front of the building.
And, finally, a regular human-sized lathe operated by a regular human. He is using his belt driven lathe to cut threads into a piece of round stock.
