Along the Nome-Teller Road

Now that I have you all calm and settled on churches in southern England, I thought I'd shakes things up with another round of birds from Alaska.

Above (and below) are a few images of the western (aka Wilson's) snipe.

This is the only time on our trip that we saw this bird. He certainly posed well for us.

Part of what makes these photos turn out well is the low sun angle. Even at noon, the sun is not nearly overhead and in the evenings it is very low, just above the horizon. Great light for photography.

Here is a stretch of the Nome-Teller road. You can see the attraction to people who choose the solitary life. There are no trees here and no people out where we are. It is a lonely, beautiful place.

We found some willows not far from the road and began calling the birds with the app and speaker. One of the residents that appeared is the common redpoll.

He's a handsome bird with his bright red spot on his head and a rosy chest.

this was again a situation where we set up our tripod 10-15 feet away and waited for the birds to appear. And come they did.

Enjoy this fine bird.
