We stopped to see some large birds in the bare trees beside the road and discovered that at least some of them were great blue herons taking care of nests.
We so often see these large, handsome birds along the seashore or river hunting for food that we forget they they nest high in the trees.
But these weren't the only ones in this stand of trees. We found a red shouldered hawk looking over his/her shoulder back in my direction.
On a sunnier day than the one we toured all the covered bridges, we still found fog on the surrounding hills.
In the reservoir near Lowell, we found some lesser scaups paddling about in the sun.
