Hooded Mergansers

I've got a batch of photos of hooded mergansers to share with you and today is the first installment. While at the Ridgefield reserve, we were in a slough of many channels and pools of water. In one of the channels were these mergansers just chilling and enjoying life.

They are handsome birds and, at the relatively low angle I was able to shoot at, they are quite photogenic.

It appears that this pair is a couple, if you see what I mean. The image below is the female with her duller, mottled colors.

This is the male with his lighter colors and conspicuous white stripe on his wing.
