Angels Camp has not one, not two, but three cemeteries (at least). Today we explore the Serbian Cemetery. It seems those Serbs are a traveling crowd of people. We find them nearly everywhere we go. there are two Orthodox churches in Angels Camp. One is Serbian Orthodox.
I'm sure there are those of you, gentle readers, who will be able to read these gravestones and tell me when I get something wrong. You know who you are.
It is clear that the people interred here had some money. There are lots of large, well-carved markers. Several have photos included on the stone. This always adds a new dimension to the story told on the stone. Even if, as in this case, I can read very little of it.
Though there is money on display here, there is plenty of tradition as well. The markers' designs all fit in a narrow bin of designs.
This small range of designs, however, include some choices that are not commonly found elsewhere.
I'm pretty sure that these photos show the resident at a younger age than indicated on the gravestone. Not only do they look younger, photos were not made every whipstitch 100+ years ago and this may have been the only image of the deceased.
