Columbia State Park - II

One of the store fronts contains an historical display on, among other things, the Native Sons of the Golden West.

There was a pretty well stocked pharmacy. today there are lot so antique labeled bottles on display. Most are things I cannot recognize. even what I can suss out is not anything anyone would ingest anymore. Lots of scary stuff in here.

But the real terror is a visit to the dentist. The chair and foot operated drill seem sort of normal. However, the box of instruments in the foreground is downright terrifying. Just seeing the collection of pliers for extractions makes my jaw ache. Of all the professions that have changed since the days of no pain killers and poor sanitation, it is dentistry that has really taken advantage of modern chemistry. Compared to what we see here, a visit now to the dentist is a perfectly pleasant affair. I don't even want to think about how these T-handle items on the front counter are used.

To recover from the disturbance in the force that a visit to the dentist caused, we had a short stop here for a cup of coffee and a soda.

The fire department has an impressive machine for putting out fires. From what we've read in the various towns in the region we've visited, fires were common and very destructive. I'm sure that such engines were heavily used.

It is no surprise that the saloon is updated to a bar with a more family oriented menu.

Well worth a visit when you are in the area.
