Pioneer Cemetery, San Andreas

Out along Hwy 49 near San Andreas is an old cemetery simply marked on the map as a pioneer cemetery. We pulled off the side of the road and climbed a hill. We had to open a gate in fence that warned us to be careful to keep it latched to avoid letting the cows out. Once inside we continued climbing up to a small grove of trees that shaded the residents.

There were graves here that were certainly not marked and others, such as the one above, that were denoted by natural and manmade markers.

Here we find gravestones that , like Australia, give a thumbnail sketch of the lives lost. A 19'th century tweet in stone.

Most of the markers here, few though they are, are fairly simple and well weathered.

One marker was in a fenced area, suggesting that this is a family plot. The most interesting thing here is the gate posts. Worn, weathered, and rusted...yet it is still in better shape than those who reside here.
