One of the main attractions in Santa Fe is this church. I was confused by the double name of "cathedral basilica". Perhaps the most cogent answer is on the St. Francis web site along with a concise history of the chuch.
These days, one enters through a side door and you are greeted by this beautifully styled candelabra and some very friendly docents who are more than happy to tell you all about the church.
The choice of colors in the designs give this place a unique feeling. Certainly not like a European church or even one from the east coast of the US.
Yet, this romanesque building has plenty of familiar elements: the round arched windows, the rosette window at the rear facing the altar, and the ornately capitals at the top of the columns holding the round arches along the aisles on either side.
The ceiling carries on with the color scheme and patterns found throughout the building. While less ostentatious than a ceiling filled with paintings of cherubs and saints, it is elegant and pleasing.
