Fairview Cemetery

Out along Cerrillos Road in Santa Fe lies the Fairview Cemetery. There are two main features of this place that really reminds me of cemeteries in Australia. First, we are in the high desert of New Mexico making it a grassless and dusty place to walk about. Secondly, there are plenty of children and young people buried here.

Edna here, died at a very tender age.

But the real surprise for us was to see a Masonic symbol on a Jewish grave stone. You would not think that this made any sense since the Masons are almost always seen connected with christianity. Turns out that Jewish Masons are quite common but we had never seen such a gravestone before. Our new thing to learn today.

Somewhat surprising is to see 19th century Jewish graves mixed in with everyone else. I suppose there was no energy to segregate them what must have been a hard place to make a living then. Everyone was in the same state in life and ending in the same state in death just seems natural, I suppose.
