Lowry Pueblo, Canyons of the Ancients

A few miles from the main road on the way to Durango, is a large area filled with the remains of native american dwellings. This area is called the Canyons of the Ancients. Since we only have a few hours in transit, we stopped to see Lowry Pueblo.

As you see above, the main kiva in this settlement is quite large.

The location is quite nice. It sits on a small rise on the edge of what is now extensive farm land. More on the farm land tomorrow in the next post.

Many places in the standing wall fragments show the holes where wooden posts were once inserted to make ceiling/floors in this multi-story complex.

A section of the structure has a large metal roof overhead to, I think, keep the rain out so it doesn't destroy the parts from which it can no longer drain after excavation.

This is a pretty large community, Of course, you will soon see the photos from Chaco Canyon and realize what large really means. But in the meantime, let this set your scale for the accomplishments for people who lived here roughly 1000 years ago.
