There are places out here in New Mexico that seem to defy the incursions of humans. The Bisti Badlands is one of these places. It is largely barren,, quite dry, and filled with ravines and hills that have no value.
Lots of rock and sand. Treacherous if you happen to drive off the road (which by the way is not paved).
But, in spite of these disclaimers, there are small points of interest to be seen. This stone arch among them.
Th constant display of dark soil colors makes the view quite uninviting and more than a little intimidating. It was a some miles to drive to this place on a dusty road through the Navajo reservation. Imagine walking across this place.
To give you a sense of the contrast, consider this view out on the paved main road. All perfectly normal and (mostly) habitable in appearance.
But the road into the badlands is much less inviting. The thin line of the the road stretches into the distance with no clear destination in view even though the does not extend over the horizon...where does it go?
Nevertheless, there are occasional rock formations that impress.
