That Buzzing Sound in the Peegee Hydrangea
Outside our bedroom window is a peegee hydrangea that is now in full bloom. With the flowers come bees and they are very busy exploring every nook and cranny of the flowers for nectar.
These trees have complicated flowers. There are the largest blossoms with the pedals open, the smaller ones that seem to be mostly stamen, and the smallest bits that remind me of popcorn. No doubt this is all stages in the development of the large blossoms, but I never see just the large flowers anywhere. I guess it just keeps producing more flowers all season.
The large blossoms tend to flatten out and be more horizontal in many cases. It makes them appear to be landing pads for tiny helicopters. Or bees?
The complicated flowers do make for a beautiful display.
But the bees really seem to enjoy the smaller flower bits. Clearly, that is where the good stuff resides.
This sections looks like an apartment building where everyone has their own helipad.
Such delicate flowers. The touch of pink (why are some pink and other white?) really enhances the appeal of the tree.
And the bees carry on with their endless task of searching out nectar in this miniature forest of delights. We wish them good luck. We aren't saving our planet, but perhaps wer can help them to save it for us.
