Greenwich - 2014
Out along the Thames, east of London, lies the former seat of royal power of Greenwich. It was also the location of much of England's naval support and training. The Old Royal Naval College, above, was originally designed by Christopher Wren and was built between 1696 and 1712 to be the The Royal Hospital for Seamen at Greenwich. in 1869, the hospital closed and between 1873 and 1998 is was the Royal Naval College.
It was here, in this hospital that Horatio Nelson's body was brought while it awaited burial. From here he was taken to the Admiralty in London where he stayed the night being watched over by his chaplain, Alexander Scott. the next day he was escorted to St. Paul's Cathedral accompanied by 32 admirals, over 100 captains, and 10,000 soldiers.
It is filled with grand spaces and chapels with magnificent paintings and statues. But some of the most fun is in the more pedestrian areas that you happen upon by serendipity.
