Reykjavik

Since Iceland is on the way home from the UK, we decided that we'd stop over here for a few days to have a look about. Think of it as a reconnoiter for a future, more extensive visit.

What you see above is the view from our hotel in the center of town. Reykjavik is a modest sized city of 123,000. Including the surrounding suburbs, it totals about 217,000. Very few buildings above 5-6 storeys.

We decided to treat ourselves to a nice dinner at a nearby restaurant where we could sample Icelandic food that was local but not too local. No fermented shark for us.

We had a truly delicious meal and elected to have a brief walkabout to settle the meal and see a little of the area.

Being only a couple blocks from the harbor, we had a look there to see the ships and the snow covered hill on the opposite shore.

Being as close to the north pole as you can get in a capital city, there is, of course, a Christmas store with the necessary letter-to-Santa style post box out front.

It was cold and we were tired so we heading in for the evening. It's going to be a great place to visit and we can already tell that there are many sights to see.

The main things to prepare yourself for a visit here are: 1) a warm hat and gloves, 2) a paid up credit card. The round trip transport to and from our hotel was a pretty eye watering. Otherwise, it is great. The hotel is nice and the beds are warm and comfortable. Good food and a city of very nice people that all speak english.
