Dómkirkja Krists konungs

Although Iceland is a predominately Church of Iceland (Lutheran), country, it does have a Catholic Cathedral. To be clear, I don't think that Icelanders are mostly any sort of religion these days, but the main one among those that have one is their flavor of Lutheran.

Elizabeth and I were out for an afternoon walk with an eye out for a place to eat and we decided to walk to this church after dinner for a bit of a leg stretch. All photos here were made on my iPhone.

The organ is modest. The ribbing of the roof is reminiscent of the gothic churches in Europe, but scaled back to fit the locale.

The simplicity of the stained glass around the altar adds an elegance that suits. None of the over-the-top gold and foo-fooffery here...just to the point. Just like you'd image a Catholic church in Iceland to be,

Without the wide-angle lens on my camera, the shot of ceiling falls pretty flat. Still the design is subtle coloring is interesting.

And so we end our visit to Iceland with this image of Christ and a set of bells. E tells me that these are the bells rung during the holiest part of the mass, the transubstantiation.

Our next stop is Snohomish and home. Looking forward to that. Five and half months on the road is long time and it will be good to be in the familiar.
