Advent Market, St. Stephen's Square

So, the Christmas markets continue to open up here in Budapest. This one is in the square in front of St. Stephen's Basilica and is called the Advent Market.

This one seems to be a bit more up-scale than the ones we've see nearby in Deák Ferenc tér or Vörösmarty tér. For example, here's a booth where they are smoking salmon for sale.

In front of the Basilica is a tiny ice rink with a not-so-tiny Christmas tree in the middle of it.

But there is, as always, food galore.

There are ceramics by the handful.

And these people making chimney cakes. These are vaguely like a donut only they are baked not fried. What you see here is the construction of one of these creations. As you see a strip of dough is wound around a wooden mandrel in a spiral. Next it is rolled to flatten the dough and bring the parts of the spiral in contact with one another. She then puts it on a rack until it is time to bake it. Then the dough, still on the mandrel is laid over the fire. When done it is doused with sugar and served hot. The result is a hollow, sweet cake that is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.

In this booth, I'm pretty sure that we can reconstruct an entire pig from the cooked parts on display.

When the sun goes down (little shy of 4:00 pm), the lights come on. There is a projector that puts a light show on the Basilica and at 7:00 each evening (about seven minutes from when this image was made), you can put on your 3-D glasses and watch a special light show that lasts about 10 minutes.

The crowd thickens after dark and everyone eats and drinks.

Because there is no shortage of food anywhere.

Sausages are quite popular.

From the steps of the Basilica, we can see the entire market.
