St. Stephen's Basilica

This place is quite large, but certainly not immense. Yet, the space, at times, overwhelms. The view above that is looking across the center aisle, leads you into a space that is truly grand on any sort of human sized endeavor.

The world of swirls and graceful curves not only dazzles and inspires, it is, oddly enough, calming. When faced with such grandeur and size, there is little to do but accept you meager role in the scheme of things and stand meekly.

Every part is ornamented as if in fear that God would be unhappy with a small moment of ordinariness. Or perhaps it is to reinforce the greatness of the Hungarian State. Hard to tell.

Below is one of my favorite images from this visit. The confusion of shapes and symmetries, the colors and contrasts, makes this an image that takes time to explore fully. I'm trying to figure out where to hang it in our apartment back home.
