St. Stephen's Basilica, Inside and Out

And so we end the tour of the interior with a fitting look at the altar area. This is truly an extravagantly decorated place, clearly meant to impress. that it certainly does.

But unlike our previous visit in the fall, we had great weather so we got tickets to travel up to the walkway around the outside of the dome. From here we can see much of the city.

In the image below, you are looking towards the Danube River. On the left one can see the green dome of the Hungarian National Gallery, housed in a portion of the Buda Castle. On the center right, the tower of the fisherman's Bastion is visible. the background is filled with the hills of Buda. At our feet is the open square of the Basilica.

This is view of the left (as viewed looking toward the front of the Basilica) bell tower.

A closer view of the National Gallery.
