Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park - II

This 135-acre park preserves a great outcropping of marbleized limestone with 1,185 mortar holes —  the largest collection of bedrock mortars anywhere in North America.

It is not hard to imagine the Miwok crowded over this limestone sheet pounding and grinding away to make enough food from this year's harvest to last through to next year.

This area is a still a used by the Miwok for gatherings and events each year. The main one is the Big Event when they gather to celebrate the annual acorn harvest.

As you can see below, the oak trees here are large and old. Some are several hundred years old.

Here is a closer look at the acorn woodpecker holes in the bark.

These majestic trees create a shady space for enjoying the warm summer sun. I recommend this as an outing to anyone who enjoys a contemplative space.
