Pink Lake

After leaving Victor Harbor, we followed the coastal roads around Lake Alexandrina and Lake Albert  to Meningie. Here we find a curiosity: Pink Lake.

The algae that grows in this salt lake produces carotene, the same stuff that is in carrots, and turns the water pink. As the water level drops (it is a salt lake, between rainy times), the color is said to get more intense.

It is a large lake rimmed by a ring of salt. Sort of reminded me of a really big pink margareta.

This place is located along the inland side of the road. On the other side is an arm of the ocean that runs along between the mainland and a barrier island.

And just to let you know that not all here is pink, looking at the ocean side as we were leaving, you can see that the ocean here is an intense green. Yes, the big green place is the water, not a field of grass.
