Greek Orthodox Cemetery
It is interesting to see the wide range of nationalities that have populated Coober Pedy. One way to see this is in the cemeteries. In the Greek Orthodox Cemetery we find very simple graves for people who, no doubt, worked very hard to make a living here.
The Orthodox are not very demonstrative about marking the graves. Most of the interred had this understated recognition. Even the marker at the head of the site simple says At Rest. Simple and to the point.
This grave was apparently originally marked with a wooden cross and it has not been updated to the simple standard At Rest marker.
I don't know the nature of the ritual but apparently this bell tower plays a role in the funeral.
As you see, very little here is freshly painted or well maintained. The sun is just too harsh to permit it for very long and the residents clearly have other things to fill their time.
