Ochre Pit
Now that the sun is higher in the sky, we're off to a place with no water and no shade. Along the Larapinta Trail is a place of some importance to the indigenous people. The Ochre Pit is a place to gather pigments for rock art and body painting for the religious rituals.
The folding of the earth has turned the layers on edge in many places making these colorful minerals available.
It is a remarkable place to visit. The colors are impressive. It is clear why this material has been used in important rituals.
We were told not to touch anything since it is still a place of cultural significance.
In places the layers are quite dramatic.
