On the road to Coober Pedy
Driving south into South Australia once again, we pass through a section with those darned pink clouds again. I really think it must be the red soil.
After crossing the border, we passed through a pretty green section with lots of bushes and grass. But this didn't last.
When we got close to Coober Pedy, the vegetation all but disappeared and the horizon filled with conical piles of white dirt. Opal mining tailings.
Of all the places we've visited, Coober Pedy is the least hospitable for humans. There are no trees anywhere nearby. It is a mining town. Dusty and filled with a strange beauty. Even here on the road headed toward town, the alien landscape is daunting. The roads are made from local materials, hence the pavement is red. The red ground, the blue sky, the conical piles of dirt in between give this a very mooscape-ish appearance.
