Loggerhead Shrike

We drove out east and north from Santa Fe to Las Vegas. Along the way, we visited the Las Vegas National Wildlife Refuge. Our timing was bad and there weren't many flavors of wildlife about to be seen. However, we did manage to see a loggerhead shrike not so very far away.

He/she really liked to perch on top of these reeds to look for food/danger. He would hop down, presumably to catch an insect, and then right back to his perch he would go.

With some patience, I managed to catch him a couple times as he regained his spot atop the reed.

I especially like this shot. He seems to be doing a pirouette on the very top of his perch.
